RELAY FOR LIFE 2016 was a great success!  Our theme this year was ROCK OUT TO KNOCK OUT CANCER, and this year it was held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Friday, July 22nd at 6 pm, and wrapped up at noon on Saturday, the 23rd.

The event was so much fun this year.  We weren’t sure if it was because we knew more people, or there were new activities at Relay, or just a new crew putting it together, but it was – like most years! – better than ever.

We offered our lap bead necklaces for a $3 donation to our team fundraising goal.  This year we added some charms – a double star [Rock Star!] and a 2016 charm – to make it more of a souvenir ~ and so you know what year each necklace is from.  This year’s beads were sparkly black, purple, and silver, to go along with the theme.  Our top bead lapper did over 27 miles – and he is 10 YEARS OLD!  Thanks to the Relay committee for donating a Relay for Life duffle bag to give to the walker of the most laps!

For dinner we had several food truck offerings this year: Big Fat Wieners, Taco King Mexican food, Dogo Brothers Kettle Korn, and Black Rock coffee.  So Kettle Korn is not really dinner, but it’s a good evening snack!

The survivor dinner was brought in from Olive Garden this year.  All survivors are welcome to join us for this dinner.  It is just a nice quiet moment to eat dinner, relax, and visit with others.

We also enjoyed the midnight pancake feed from Chris Cakes.  The pancake feed is $10 for all you can eat pancakes, sausage, and tang.  Yes, tang!  It is all you can eat, and the full proceeds go back to our Relay event.  Anyone and everyone is welcome to come out and eat, so keep that in mind for next year!
Some of the new events and activities this year were Bubble soccer – you climb into a big bubble with your feet sticking out, and play soccer! - and a beautiful team of special needs people who presented a terrific color guard! [picture left].

The Luminaria Ceremony is one of the most beautiful parts of the whole event.  We have a short ceremony and this year they presented a slide show of pictures of loved ones – both those we have lost and survivors – and while your heart breaks watching it, we all know how important it is to keep honoring those we have lost, and continue the fight for our survivors.
It is always breathtaking to silently walk the track and see the dedications on the luminaria bags to those we have lost, to honor our survivors, and continue to spread love and hope for those who are battling cancer.  We have lost many loved ones, and have several survivors in our immediate and extended family – and we enjoy the opportunity to honor and support in this way, and we thank you for joining us in doing so.  Many of you have shared the names or stories of those in your life that have been affected by cancer, and I [Tiersa] keep all of those names in mind as I walk, but even more so during the luminaria ceremony and lap.

Until next year, have a wonderful 2016, and we hope to see you next year – on our sponsor wall or joining us at Relay!

Tonight I am sitting alongside a track at a local school.  Life has been nice and crazy lately, and I had a moment – just one moment the other day – where I thought maybe we would just skip this relay.  I knew we couldn’t skip it.  I knew we had to show up.  And tonight I am very glad we did.

Each year relay is a little bit different.  This year the energy is a little zippier.  A little zingier.  Maybe it’s because this is our third year offering lap bead necklaces, and people know us more, and we know more of them.  Maybe it’s because some new committee members did an awesome job.  Maybe we are finding our groove.

Whatever it is, I am glad I am here.  10 pm and we have the Luminaria ceremony.  They run a slide show of those touched by cancer, and I silently think about why I am really here.  My family members and friends touched by or lost to cancer.

Both grandfathers – what I learned from them is you fight the good fight and you persevere, no matter what the doctor tells you.

My grandmother – from whom I learned that we really are the ones in charge of our own bodies.  I think she may have taught a few medical professionals that too!

My husband – who lost his mother and best friend to cancer, and watched his sister battle – and beat it! – not once, but twice.

Countless other friends and acquaintances.

And myself.  I rarely talk about this, and so few people even know.  I am one of the supercalifragilisticexpialidocious ones whose doctor saw it coming and took preventative measures, only to tell me, over the phone, as I am driving into the grocery store parking lot two weeks later that it was more advanced than they thought, so they weren’t as careful as they should have been, so guess what, “you are on the two year watch list”.  That moment is etched in my mind, and I am so grateful every day that those two years were over six years ago, and I am 8 years cancer free.  I am grateful every day that I am healthy, and I want to honor those who have had to battle so much more.  And those who have taught me so much.

Our team is Wally’s Jolly Walkers.  We came up with the name because we are Wally & Son Automotive, so it was a nice way to tie it together.  But I started because I never got to meet my mother in law - Wally's wife and Keith's mom - and that was the only reason I needed.

There are too many cancers, and so many wonderful fundraising walks.  I am glad to be a part of this community, part of this team, and part of this cause.  Together I think we can make magic happen.
